This is a very recent commission, shooting studio portraits for recently formed 60s covers band Sandy and the Secrets.

I attended a recent rehearsal the band were having at the Cinnamon Rooms in Bowdon, set up a mini studio and shot the portraits below in a break between songs.  The band only formed recently and these shots are, first, for the website that they’re having built, and secondly, for any pr and promotion that the band will get over the next few months.

The key was simplicity, but also to tap into the early sixties vibe that the band are recreating in their music.  They played their part by wearing their stage costumes (three button suits, button down collars and cuban heeled boots for the boys, minidress and back combed hair for Sandy), while I tried to get that mood created all those years ago by David Bailey in his iconic shots of the Beatles and the Stones.  In a nod to the present though, I’ve kept the images in colour.  For the technically minded out there, lighting was one large Octa soft box, left of camera and slightly angled to give that slight shadow to the right hand side.

If you’re tempted, they’re playing their first gig at the Cinnamon Rooms on Friday September 22nd.  A few tickets are still available, but you’ll have to be quick as they’re going fast!  I’ve heard them in rehearsal twice now, and can promise you a great show, packed with plenty of familiar tunes.  Or keep an eye out for them if you’ve an event coming up that needs a good band to get the dance floor filled.
