“Why is everyone always smiling in your event photos?”

I get asked this a lot, to be honest.  Because a lot of business events are no laughing matter.  Some are informative, many impart serious information or discuss important topics.  May, sadly, are downright dull.  Yet every event that I shoot looks like everyone was loving being there.  Often it looks like they were having the time of their lives.  Why is that?

The answer goes all the way back to a conversation right at the start of my career.  A PR and event lady (for whom I ended up doing a lot of work over the years) told me that I only had to do two things when I was photographing one of her events – make it look busy, and show everyone having a great time.

And, to be honest, that’s all I’ve tried to do ever since.

You see, she was great at her job and understood PR.  Who would want to come to a future event if the previous one looked awful?  Nobody would, of course.  Make it look busy, so she looked good at her job; and because a room full of prospects is a more attractive thought than a half empty one.  And show everyone smiling and laughing because her events were great fun to be at.

It’s not rocket science, but it’s astonishing how many people publish photos of events that are, frankly, off putting.  Glum faces, or people on their phones rather than paying attention.

It does take a lot of effort and concentration, not to mention a lot of people watching to catch those great moments and expressions but it’s definitely worth it.

And the net result?  Better marketing material for you to advertise your next event of course.  By making your last one look as good as it was, you’ve got great material to tempt people to book onto the next one.
